Universal Access Milcare is a totally owned subsidiary of Herman Miller Inc., one of the largest manufacturers of systems office solutions and ergonomic work seating in America. As the medical division, Milcare sells a variety of products into the acute care hospital: standard office products in administrative areas, modified panel systems as nurse stations or in laboratories, and unique solutions to materials management problems with Costruc modular storage components and associated system of compatible carts. Milcare is a systems solution company where each new product development has to be evaluated in the perspective of the whole vocabulary of components. Even a minor engineering change will cascade across the entire system application. The development of the Low Access Nurse Station was an example of a requirement to modify systems product for a specific application. Specifically the need to satisfy Universal Access needs became more acute in the hospital setting where we can expect to encounter wheelchairs on a constant basis.
