CASE STUDY

High Tech Medical Capital Equipment.

By way of example, in the last Megateam program, development of an operating room table, the primary research phase lasted three months, running concurrently with initial design activities.

It began with a series of corporate video interviews with personnel in manufacturing, marketing, sales, and service. These interviews helped establish the common perspectives and objectives, which were then taken out into the field sales and customer environments. The product performance specification, a living document within the process, began to evolve and was continuously modified by ongoing research activities which allowed real time validation of each proposed feature.

The emerging performance specification, allowed the design team to begin creating design concepts exploring the proposed product vision. This lead into a series of design research activities, centered around the proposed design concepts. In a parallel activity another group was investigating new technology opportunities. This led to new and innovative product capabilities, further impacting the design process. Validation at market levels became a requirement and we turned to quantitative techniques including direct mail questionnaires and in-depth telephone interviews.

The resulting performance specification was a clear document with universal "buy off." It facilitated a streamlined development process, and creation of a 1st level engineering model in a total of nine months.
